This article is about a character from Ultima VII. For the type of monster in Ultima I, see Trents.

Trent is the ghost of a blacksmith which dwells in Skara Brae. The Avatar encountered him in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Trent had once been married to the beautiful Rowena, a young woman who had the misfortune of attracting the unwelcome attentions of Horance the liche. Desirous to make her his own, the necromancer sent his minions to kidnap the blacksmith's wife, and she was killed while attempting escape. Overcome with maddening grief, Trent vowed vengeance against Horance, and set tirelessly to the task of constructing the Soul Cage which Mordra claimed would be necessary for the liche's defeat. The flames of his rage burned so hotly that he was oblivious to the eventual destruction of the city, failing to recognize even his own death due to the all-consuming nature of his hatred.[1]

When the Avatar arrived on the island, the hero was at last able to wake Trent from his anger - giving him a token from Rowena's shade which proved his wife's continued love for him. Finally realizing the reality of the ruined city around him, Trent was at last able to finish the Cage, which the Avatar was then able to use to wrest Horance from his state of undeath. No longer a liche, the conscience-stricken magician bade the Avatar reunite the separated couple, and Rowena was led out of the Dark Tower, where Horance had kept her, and brought to Trent's waiting arms.[2]

Later, the Avatar was tasked with destroying the Well of Souls - an errand which would require that one of the ghosts of Skara Brae should willingly commit himself to oblivion. When the hero asked Trent and Rowena if either of them would make such a sacrifice, both refused, wishing never again to be separated. Eventually, the task fell to the former mayor of the city, Forsythe, and with the Well's destruction, Trent and his beloved were free at last to return to the Void.[3]

Lore[edit]

In addition to all his other evils, Horance took from Trent (our blacksmith) his wife, Rowena. He sent his undead minions to retrieve her shortly before the inferno, which they did - dead. The brainless, rotting corpses killed her!

Poor Trent does nothing but repeat the same task he was engaged in when the fire struck - building the cage necessary to trap the liche. Tis doubtful he is even aware of his death. He just continues to hammer away at the cage. And Rowena seems to be in a similar daze. I know that if there were but some way to waken her, she would have the key to help Trent. I keep wondering if there is something of hers left in the smithy that might trigger her awareness if presented to her...

Trivia[edit]

  • Should the player take the Soul Cage before Trent has finished it, the ghost will comment on its absence in his dialogue, growing agitated at its loss.[2]
  • In the SNES Port of Ultima VII, Trent is portrayed as being overcome with despondency, rather than anger. He is aware of his own death and that of Rowena's and will freely offer the Avatar the music box as a token of his remembrance.[4]
