Sullivan is a con-artist who makes his living by impersonating the Avatar. The true Avatar has the opportunity to meet him in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Living in an era when the Champion of Virtue had not been seen for centuries, Sullivan preyed upon the beliefs of traditional Britannians by claiming to be the Avatar, conning them out of money and goods. He carried on in this guise for quite a while, but eventually was caught and imprisoned by the Fellowship when they discovered him attempting to steal from their branch office in Buccaneer's Den.[1]

Trapped in the secret dungeons the society had built upon the island, Sullivan was regularly tortured by his sadistic jailer, a troll known as Grod; his companion in these agonies was a fellow prisoner, Anton. In the midst of his pain, however, the cynical rogue came to the conclusion that the Fellowship was just as morally bankrupt as he, recognizing that the equally selfish Guardian, once present in the realm, would have no reason to show succor to those who had helped him to power. Content that the world would soon end, Sullivan claimed no regrets for his life as a criminal, saying that it fell to him to enjoy what was left of Britannia before its fall.[2]

Should the true Avatar discover Anton and Sullivan exploring Buccaneer's Den, the hero could opt to slay Grod and to free the two prisoners. If thus rescued, however, Sullivan would gleefully explain that he intended to return to his con, thanking the hero.

Sullivan's Exploits[edit]

Below is a list of incidents throughout Ultima VII that may be traced back to Sullivan:

  • Mayor Finnigan of Trinsic attests an individual posing as the Avatar took the Rune of Honor from its pedestal in Trinsic and never returned with it. It later found its way to the Royal Museum in Britain.[3]
  • Dell of Trinsic recounts that a person claiming to be the Avatar scammed him for a sum of twenty gold coins.[4]
  • Greg of Britain was robbed by a man dressed as the Avatar.[5]
  • Malloy and Owings name Sullivan specifically when they recall how the "Avatar" sold them a treasure map leading to the (already claimed) Covetous mines. They paid one hundred crowns for it.[6]
  • Chad of Moonglow recalls having met "an Avatar" a few weeks prior to his meeting with the genuine hero, although he does not mention being the victim of any crimes.[7]
  • Sprellic of Jhelom was conned into giving a purported "Avatar" a great number of accommodations and rich foods at his inn, the Bunk and Stool. Sullivan later left the establishment without paying, inadvertently taking with him the "honor flag" from the Library of Scars.[8]
  • Sir Richter of Serpent's Hold reports that a man claiming to be the Avatar stole several weapons from his armoury.[9]
  • Blacktooth of Buccaneer's Den was cheated out of some gold at a card game by somebody claiming to be the Avatar.[10]
  • Gordy at Buccaneer's Den's House of Games claims that an "Avatar" was caught attempting to cheat.[11]

Lore[edit]

Sullivan is wanted in several townships for fraud, thievery, and other petty crimes. He is known to be a member of The Fellowship, though The Fellowship has denied any knowledge of such a member. In many reports of the man's crimes, victims have stated that he claimed to be the Avatar.

Trivia[edit]

  • Should Anton be present while speaking to Sullivan, he will chime in occasionally to comment on what the thief says, mentioning that in addition to his other crimes, Sullivan is a tax evader.[12]
