Pomdirgun is the leader of the goblin horde on Serpent Isle. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Pomdirgun, who claimed the legendary chieftain Gurnordir as his ancestor, was the leader of the goblins during the time of the Avatar’s adventures on Serpent Isle. Cruel and cunning, the goblin king had followed his ancestor's legacy in uniting his people in a collective horde,[1] and his campaign against humanity had seen marked success, with goblins having taken Fawn Tower from the Monitorian pikeman shortly before the Avatar's ship made landfall.

The secret behind Pomdrigun's success lay in his covert alliances with human agents. Not only had the goblins successfully installed one of their own in Monitor as a spy, disguising him as human being,[2] but Pomdirgun additionally had the benefit of an alliance with Marsten, the reigning Monitorian Lord, and Spektor, his treasurer and secretary. Hungry for power, Marsten had colluded with the goblin king in the hopes of decimating the Commands that rivaled his own, believing that he would eventually install himself as king and eradicate the goblins using a newly developed experimental weapon.[3][4]

Eventually, the Avatar would discover the true identity of the goblin spy, Simon, who betrayed Pomdirgun as he lay dying, giving the hero information as to how to locate and raid the goblins' major settlement.[2] In the midst of laying siege to the goblins, the hero would confront and do battle with Pomdirgun, and in this melee, the goblin king would speak to the Avatar, proclaiming that his people had lived on Serpent Isle long before the New Sosarians attempted to settle the land and that someday the race of man would be extinguished.[5] While Pomdirgun was eventually slain by Britannia’s champion, his prediction did, perhaps, come to fruition in some way. Following the release of the Banes of Chaos, the goblin horde did manage to overtake Monitor and slaughter most of the city's inhabitants, having been led against the Monitorians by the Bane of Wantoness, which had possessed the body of Sir Dupre.

Trivia[edit]

  • If Simon's death is brought up in conversation with Pomdirgun, the goblin chief will ask the Avatar if the hero ate Simon after killing him and will make darkly humorous remarks to both affirmative and negative replies to the question.[6]
