Luther is a Serpent Islander and Monitorian Knight. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Luther was a proud and arrogant Knight of Monitor's Bear Command who delighted in self-aggrandizement and was wont to bully weaker fighters. Vain and overconfident, Luther claimed to be the greatest warrior in all Monitor and would back his words on the dueling field should any dare to disagree with him;[1] at the time of the Avatar’s arrival on Serpent Isle, he was even in the midst of having a statue of himself commission in tribute to his perceived glory. However, despite being a formidable opponent and skilled combat trainer, many of his fellow Knights held a low opinion of him, particularly those who were women. While Harnna would politely caution that Luther was a man best avoided,[2] Lucilla, the local tavernkeeper, was far less guarded in her criticism, denouncing him as a repulsive buffoon.[3] Cellia, the furrier, cattily derided his lackluster skills as a hunter, and would intimate that his composure on the battlefield could be disrupted should one draw him into losing his temper.[4]

His most notable feud, however, was with Krayg, the town provisioner. After the Knight Champion Astrid and her patrol were massacred in a Goblin attack, it became clear that Monitor sheltered a traitor, and Luther publicly accused Krayg of collusion in the midst of a public banquet celebrating the Avatar's initiation as a Monitorian Knight, engendering a public brawl with Shazzana that disrupted the festivities. Not one to back down from an accusation, Luther maintained his position until the real traitors were ferreted out, and in the ensuing conflict, Krayg and other members of the Wolf Command seemed eager to cast suspicion on Luther himself.[5][6][7]

Luther is additionally notable in that he was the accidental recipient of Dupre’s enchanted shield after the item was transposed with his own pikeman's shield during a teleport storm. Should the Avatar discover this and ask for the item's return, Luther would initially lie and claim the shield as a family heirloom,[8] although he would return it to its rightful owner should he be bested by one of the Avatar's company on the List Field. Interestingly, should he suffer defeat in combat, he would prove much humbled by the experience, proclaiming the hero to be his friend and voluntarily returning the shield of his own accord. He would even entertain thoughts of joining the Avatar in the course of the hero's adventures, although he would ultimately decline, feeling his first loyalty should be to his city.[9]

Luther, like virtually all who inhabited Monitor, ultimately met his end in the great battle in which the doomed city was overrun by Goblins and monsters, who were led in their invasion by the loosed Bane of Wantoness while it possessed Dupre’s body.

Lore[edit]

I was about to ask him more, when a surly-looking warrior entered. Caladin introduced him as Luther. Luther looked me over and threatened to toss me out of the city for my lack of face markings. Shazzana then upbraided him for insulting a Xenkan monk. Their fight escalated and look as though it would come to blows, so I quietly slipped away.

Trivia[edit]

  • A search of Luther's quarters on the corner of Pedigar Street and Roland Street will turn up 8 monetari.
  • Should the player uncover Marsten and Spektor's involvement with the goblins, it will activate a flag such that Luther will say "Now that I am Lord of the Bears, Monitor is at last safe from invasion" when asked about the keyword "brave."[11] It is unclear as to how Luther is to be understood as having assumed the title of Lord, however, given that Brendann appears to be the reigning lord of the city,[12] with Caladin remaining at the head of the Bear Command.
  • It is possible to use Luther's possession of Dupre's shield to cheat one's way into obtaining two shields of this type. By casting Vibrate on Luther before defeating him in combat, the hero will cause him to drop the copy of Dupre's shield that is present in his inventory. The Avatar may then best him in combat and speak to him in order to have a second copy of the shield "returned."
  • Duelling with Luther for the shield is only possible by doing training with him – meaning enough training points have to be present. That also means saving before doing this is a must, in case it goes wrong.
