George Washington Carver (1860-1943), is an American scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor

Description[edit]

In Martian Dreams, Carver was transported to Mars in the accidental launch of Percival Lowell's space bullet at its exhibition at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Some time during his stay on Mars, Carver came in contact with the Dream Machine of Elysium, and was trapped in the Dream World while the Martian Cheshef inhabited his body.

George Washington Carver was later freed from his nightmare within the Dream World when the Avatar met him, and agreed to help him in an experiment to study the Martian life cycle. The Avatar protected a growing Martian seedling from worms which threatened the young growth, and later split open the pod to reveal Carver himself. After leaving the Dream World, Carver talked at length about his experiments with the plants, and his work in improving agriculture back on Earth. He also talked of his love of painting, and his experience drawing flowers. [1]

With the creation of mechanical bodies for the Martians, George Washington Carver was restored to his body and returned to Earth on Andrew Carnegie's rocket.

Lore[edit]

Born to slave parents, Carver fought the odds and turned a lifelong affinity for plants into a career. In 1896, he became head of agricultural research for the Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes at Tuskagee, Alabama. There, he pioneered multi-crop farming and crop rotation, and synthesized over 400 substances from peanuts and sweet potatoes (including dyes, milk, linoleum, glue, soap, flour, oil, pain, ink, butter, coffee, and even synthetic rubber. Thomas Edison once offered Carver a salary of $100,000 to join him at his lab in New Jersey, but Carver turned him down, saying he was needed at Tuskagee. Remarkable, remarkable man.

Trivia[edit]

  • In 1893 (the year in which the fictional Lowell expedition takes place), George Washington Carver was actually present at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, and had on display a painting of a yucca and cactus.
  • It's only at that point the Avatar is supposed to learn what wormsbane is good for, though of course it can be used before.
