Food in Ultima VII

From Ultima Codex
Jump to navigation Jump to search

In Ultima VII and Serpent Isle, eating is essential for keeping your party at full strength. However, each food item has a different feeding value. The food status of a party member is indicated on a hidden 31 point scale, with 31 being full and 0 being starving to death. In this table, the point values of the various food items (i.e., how much of the bar they refill) is shown.

Conclusions[edit]

The table tells us that all kinds of meat and cheese are very filling. Fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, are not, and drinks have no nutritional or restorative value, just like silverleaf which is much more expensive (30gp in Trinsic). The Everlasting Goblet in Serpent Isle acts as an infinite food source, but has a very low feeding value. Using the spell Create Food with the Ring of Reagents (which eliminates the need for reagents) is more time-efficient.

Attaining Food in the Wild[edit]

Buying food also can be expensive. Thus here the various animals that can be killed and what they net in terms of food. These sources are also renewable.

Trivia[edit]

  • Amusingly, eating other people's food – not stealing it, eating it directly – is treated like a major crime and will almost always make the companions leave and conjure the guards. Simply stealing it has little to no consequences, however. The same rules also apply to potions.
  • The feeding mechanic of both parts of Ultima VII became the stuff of video game legends due to the sheer amount of time the player spends with it and the companions not eating on their own. It spawned many parodies making fun of said game mechanic in various ways.[Citation needed]
