First appearance: Ultima Underworld
Last appearance: Serpent Isle

Fire elementals are living incarnations of elemental flame which may be found manifested on a variety of worlds. They appear in Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld II as well as in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Fire elementals have been found in the realms Britannia, Rhiannon and Serpent Isle and often congregate near volcanic activity and other sources of heat conducive to their elements. Possessed of a fury as biting as the flame they embody, these deadly creatures attack their opponents with the living fires of their own bodies and are unlikely to relent once provoked. It should be noted, however, that they have markedly poor vision, and may be avoided or outrun by a crafty adventurer.

While the difference appears to be purely cosmetic, there is some variation in the appearance of fire elementals on different planes. The elementals of Britannia and Rhiannon have a flickering and intangible visage, looking very much like normal spouts of flame aside from their glowering faces. On Serpent Isle, however, fire elementals take a vaguely humanoid shape and leave behind ashen corpse-like husks when being killed.

Lore[edit]

These beings of fire, left in the chasms after eruptions of lava in the last age, are among the most challenging foes of the Abyss. First of all, one should know that these Elementals have the ability to toss portions of themselves — balls of living fire — at their opponents. Secondly, they are fearsome warriors: quick to attack with their flaming arms, nimble enough to escape most blows, and sturdy enough to withstand grievous damage. As they can kill a man in only a few blows, it is often prudent to avoid their attention by passing quietly and at a distance (Elementals are said to be nearly blind).
An elemental is a living incarnation of one of the four elements of nature: earth, wind, fire and water. Beyond this, I know little — their origins are unguessable, their motives, inscrutable. When angered, they are capable of unleashing great destructive force.
