Van Kellian is a bard at The Sword and Keg in Jhelom in Ultima VI.
Description[edit]
The Avatar found Van Kellian to be a somewhat vain man who believed strongly in the virtue of Compassion. Iolo snidely commented that Van Kellian acted like he was doing the Avatar a favour by singing for him. The bard sang songs of love to the Avatar, and told of how after giving a few gold coins to a beggar, he learned the mantra of pride was 'lum'.
Van Kellian and Stelnar were often at odds over the nature of the gargoyle living in the Drylands, Sin'Vraal, with Van Kellian believing the gargoyle was worthy of love if Lord British said it was OK, while Stelnar thought leaving any gargoyle alive was an affront to Valor. Van Kellian further explained that Valor comes from the courage to be virtuous, while Compassion comes from a love of mankind. Even though Van Kellian had never fought a gargoyle in combat, he had heard their skin was stony and tough, and they made fierce yowlings that caused a man's blood to run cold.[1]
Lore[edit]
“ | It's a cheerful, lusty, down to earth sort of tavern, where the sin of moderation is rarely practiced. Bards are always welcome there, but even when none are to be found, the fighters will sing their own songs, striving to make up in loudness and enthusiasm what they lack in experience. They've worked the Mantra of Valor into one of their ballads, I hear. – from The Book of Prophecy (Ultima VI)
