Ultima VI Reference Guide
Ultima VI was distributed with a reference guide.
Description[edit]
The card included with Ultima VI was markedly different from those from earlier games. The cover shows a picture from the Compendium, though in lower quality and shrunk. After providing detailed instructions on how to install the game, set up multiple characters, and navigate the main menu, the new interface is explained in detail over several pages, along with the still-existing keyboard commands. At the end, a quick list of all spells in the game is included to reduce flipping pages in the Compendium.
Other Editions[edit]
A second revision of the guide was created for later releases; it had no title picture, but otherwise the content was the same. The card was revised again for the Ultima VI/Wing Commander combo by Software Toolworks, taking into account that the games were now stored on a CD-ROM. It was also printed with blue ink. The release in the Ultima Trilogy IV V VI would combine this with the other reference cards. The guide for the Amiga version has the same cover design and includes the needed technical changes for the port. The guide for the C64 again has a different design, also including the picture, and is vastly different due to the massive changes in the port.
While at first the US guide was included in games sold in Europe, soon enough it was replaced for all ports with a trilingual guide (English, French, German) for the IBM PC, Amiga, Atari ST and C64, which sported the cover from the first US guide, slightly altered. In Japan, the translated guides for the PC-98 and FM Towns were the same content-wise (apart from system differences), though with different covers.
