Dr. Owl is one of the Seers of the Moonstone residing on the sixth level of the Abyss in Ultima Underworld. With knowledge of the Wine of Compassion, he plays a significant role in the Avatar’s quest, becoming a key figure in obtaining this crucial artifact. He is also a knowledgeable source regarding runic magic and possesses a rare flam-rune stone.

Description[edit]

The Avatar found him together with the other mages on the sixth level of the Abyss. Dr. Owl told the Avatar of the Wine of Compassion, but would only reveal its location after the return of his missing servant, Murgo. The Avatar freed Murgo on the third level from the clutches of the lizard men; Dr. Owl was thankful, explaining in detail where to find the talisman of Compassion.

Dr. Owl, when asked about rune stones, noticed that the Avatar was indeed using runic magic and asked to see the Avatar's rune bag. Doing so, the old mage would notice that the Avatar was missing a flam-rune stone and gave the hero one of these highly sought-after rune stones, enabling the hero to finally use spells of fire against foes.

Following the cataclysm that threatened the Abyss, Garamon related that he used his powers to transport many of the inhabitants to safety from the doomed colony.

Lore[edit]

Scan of the cover of the Ultima Underworld Clue Book, depicting an adventurer descending a flight of dungeon stairs, with an armoured monster at the bottom, in the foreground.

These are the chambers of Dr. Owl, a scholar noted for his short temper and overestimation of his powers. Murgo, the mute imprisoned on the third level, is his servant, and the good doctor is at a loss to continue his studies without the mute. It is ironic that Dr. Owl knows the location of the Wine of Compassion, since he has so little of that failing himself.

Trivia[edit]

  • The MS-DOS version of his portrait suggests he is totally blind, although the transcript gives no indication of this nor does his portrait in the PSX version.
  • He is the alter ego of an Origin employee, Dr. Cat.
  • Looking at Dr. Owl the player is told "You see a friendly mage named Dr. Owl." but upon speaking with him realizes that the "friendly" part was less than accurate.
  • Dr. Owl calls the rune bag a "runebag" (without a space) but it is a "rune bag" everywhere else in the game
