Ultima VII
Location: Terfin

Betra is a wingless gargoyle working as a provisioner on Terfin in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Should the Avatar speak with Betra, the gargoyle would prove most helpful and polite, directing the hero to Teregus or Forbrak for more information about their island home. If asked about the settlement, he would explain how Terfin was uniquely a Gargish town, and would speak about the racial tensions between the gargoyles and humans on the mainland, mentioning the irony of Vesper, the only city with near equal gargoyle and human populations, having so many problems with racial conflict.[1]

If asked about Quaeven's intentions to recruit him to the Fellowship, Betra indicated his resistance to the idea and affirmed his faith in the Gargish principles, in which he finds contentment. He expressed his fondness for Quaeven, but stated his belief that the happiness he found was not caused by the Fellowship, and that Quaeven was being misled by them.[2]

He admitted, if questioned, that he had heard rumors of a conspiracy to destroy the altars to the Three Principles, and would indicate that Sarpling, a Fellowship member, was the only gargoyle aside from himself with the needed equipment to carry out such an undertaking.[3]

Lore[edit]

Betra and Sarpling are our two provisioners, though each sells different types of supplies. Betra carries a general line of equipment, while Sarpling concentrates on Gargish jewelry and other items specific to our culture. Many travelers and merchants do not realize this fact, and often one of the two provisioners will receive the other's merchandise by mistake.

Trivia[edit]

  • Betra translates to "Small Valor" in Gargish.[1]
  • Buying a jug from him is impossible thanks to a bug. It will only result in a garbled graphic in the backpack which cannot removed or interacted with.
  • All three of the Gargoyle items the Avatar can buy will always be a wing scratcher, which either is an oversight on Betra’s part, or a bug. All three items have no use, anyway.
