Alfred is a man condemned to the Abyss by Baron Almric for crime(s) unspecified. His bloodstained bones are found not far from the entrance on the first level of Ultima Underworld.
Description[edit]
Little is known of Alfred, as he is not mentioned by anyone encountered by the Avatar. All that is known is that a letter was found with his remains. The letter was signed by Sandra, presumably his lover.
The bones identify as being those of a fighter. Among his remains is a backpack containing the following items:
- A rune bag.
- A red key (6–1), described as "The handle of this key is tarnished from heavy use.", which opens many of the doors on the first level.
- A ragged scroll, on which is penned a letter from Sandra (see lore quote below).
- Four rune stones: In, Bet, Lor, and Sanct.
His remains are found on the first level, a short distance west of the main entrance, in a corner between two doors.
Although having a very small presence in the Avatar's adventures, he is one of the most important characters to the hero. He carried a rune bag, the only such container recovered within the Abyss. Without this, runic magic would not have been possible and the Avatar would be limited to the magic provided by potions, scrolls, and wands. Apart from the rune bag, the rune stones he carried provide an introduction to basic spellcasting. Combined with the nearby Ort and Jux rune stones, the Avatar could begin adventuring in the Abyss with several useful spells.
