The 1.19f patch for Ultima IX is an unofficial patch that improves performance, eliminates bugs and removes copy protection.
The 1.18f patch is the last official patch for Ultima IX released by Origin. However, an unknown programmer did further work and published the unofficial patch 1.19f in January 2001 without Origin's involvement. The patch improved the game quite a bit and nowadays it is the basis for all further patches and changes, meaning it has to be installed.
Actually, due to Microsoft removing support for SafeDisc DRM, this patch is needed to even run the game, since it does remove SafeDisc – which Ultima IX uses – from the executable, thus making the game compatible with modern OSes.
